The Clausell Elementary Media Project is an in-school and afterschool enrichment initiative to connect students with a network of media professional mentors, an innovative journalism curriculum aligned to Common Core and a collaborative space to develop digital media, critical thinking, and communication skills while producing original news reports. The project will cultivate the voices of our scholars, improve literacy, and build self-confidence while creating community in the school. We will bring writing, media, arts, theater, and critical thinking to our scholars.

The seeds were planted to form the Youth Media Project after our 5th grade students took a field trip to the University of Mississippi's Meek School of Journalism and New Media where a guest speaker spoke to students and teachers about the unfair and incomplete way that most mainstream media cover young people, especially young people of color. Our 5th graders learned how students were able to “be the media” with the variety of resources and opportunities on campus.
